Shoshone Falls on the Snake River just east of the city of Twin Falls in southern Idaho, appears on this 2002 U.S. postage stamp, one of fifty different designs meant to resemble vintage “Greetings from…” post cards: one from each of the fifty states. It’s fitting that Shoshone Falls represents the State of Idaho since it’s one of the state’s biggest tourist attractions. In fact, Shoshone Falls was attracting tourists as early as 1860, well before Idaho even became a state.
The falls drop 212 ft. which is about 25 ft. higher than Niagara Falls. But flow over the falls can be quite erratic as much of the Snake River above the falls is diverted for irrigation. The best time to see Shoshone Falls is in the spring when the river is fed by substantial snowmelt. By the end of summer, it’s usually little more than a trickle.
