Mr. Randolph was a local merchant, said to have been a distant kinsman to Thomas Jefferson, and he constructed one of the city's earliest
houses (1871), which is still with us today. He was a casualty of the 1873 yellow fever epidemic that struck the city, one of many such who are buried here. The marble column stands about 12' tall and is enclosed by a beautiful iron fence -- note the personalized gate -- that is in excellent condition save for one missing section. Decorated with ivy, "In memory of my husband" is on the plinth, while a grapevine wraps around the section between the plinth and the shaft. On the front, ivy leaves complement the inscription, and there are epitaphs on the two adjacent sides:

Oct. 16, 1873,
Aged 28 Y'rs.
Within this silent tomb rests one,
In life to me most dear,
Whose image fills this saddened heart
Whose memory lingers here.
Short were our years of wedded bliss,
Alas, too swift they fled,
And all my love and all my joy
Alive in thee are dead.

Sleep sweetly now beloved one!
From all thy cares at rest,
God called thee from this earth to dwell
Among the pure and blest.
And when this weary life is o'er,
With all ists [sic] toil and pain,
Oh! may we meet to part no more,
Where [endless] joy shall reign.

A wreath of roses and a shroud cover the shaft, and the compass and square of the Freemasons is just below the wreath on the front. As for Mrs. Randolph, she married Scott Field in 1878, the -Field part of the house name. He went onto serve in both the state and national Congresses, and they are both buried here as well.
