The factory was built in Eibergen in 1834 and opened a few years later. Over the years, a cotton weaving mill was maintained by various owners.
The Prakke Factory was founded around 1900. The Prakke family ran several factories, of which only this building remains.
Around 1970, the Gemavo, a machine factory, established itself in this building. Many residents of Eibergen have worked here for years. However, this company went bankrupt in 2001.
In 2006 the building was bought by the Habion foundation with the plan to realize care homes. This was unsuccessful and the building remained vacant for years.
After the building had been empty for more than 14 years, Dirk Jan Heijnen and Joyce Stellinga bought it to establish a B&B Hotel. The municipality gave the green light.
The name "Kastanjefabriek" has its origins in the fact that large chestnut trees used to stand in front of it. The story goes that with the arrival of the car in the last century, the falling chestnuts (kastanjes in the Dutch language) caused damage to the cars. The chestnut trees were then replaced by the current beech trees. Popularly, the factory has continued to be called “De Kastanjefabriek”.
