The Place:
"The Gary Bridge" is a four-lane concrete bridge, dedicated in 1957, that spans the Cimarron River as part of Highway 281. The monument shown in this waymark is at the northwest corner of the bridge. There is no formal parking, but there is ample room on the shoulder to pull over and examine the marker.
The Person:
Raymond Gary served as the 15th governor of Oklahoma. He was the first Governor to be born in Oklahoma since statehood. Elected in 1955, his first actions were to ensure compliance with the outcome of Brown vs. Board of Education, decided the previous year, by ordering the desegregation of Oklahoma schools and the removal of "white only" and "colored only" signs. He also supported improvement to the state's roads and highways, and was Governor when the routes for I-40 and I-35 were determined.
