A misfortune of planning by the renowned I.M. Pei, the design intention of 1969's
Cathedral Square as a lively public piazza for Providence, Rhode Island, falls flat.
At the plaza east of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence Chancery and north of the Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul there is a conical fountain. Today, the brick water feature is crumbling. Embedded beside its only dimensional landmark, "FOUNTAIN OF LIFE - A MEMORIAL TO THE UNKNOWN CHILD", is a bible quote. An engraved granite tablet on the ground to the northeast of the fountain reads:
I HAVE SET BEFORE LIFE
AND DEATH THE BLESSING
AND THE CURSE. CHOOSE LIFE,
THEN, THAT YOU AND YOUR
DESCENDANTS MAY LIVE.
