SMEDERIJ KRAMER
Sinds mensenheugenis zit er in de Oudewaterse buurgemeente Hekendorp een smid. En die smeden komen allemaal uit hetzelfde geslacht: de familie Kramer. De aard van de werkzaamheden is in al die jaren wel veranderd, zo maakte de eerste smid schaatsen en ging de smederij daarna van allerhande herstelwerkzaamheden in vroeger tijden, naar grote restauratiestukken nu.
OP STERVEN NA DOOD
Eigenaar Frits is trots op zijn zaak en verknocht aan Hekendorp. Dat hij smid is geworden, ging niet zonder slag of stoot. Waar de eerdere generaties Kramer - de smederij bestaat al meer dan 100 jaar - soms verplicht in de zaak gingen werken, werd het Frits juist afgeraden. "Op school zeiden ze dat het vak 'dood' was. Je kon in mijn tijd niet meer voor smid leren." Frits liet het er niet bij zitten en gelukkig vond hij een docent die wel wat in zijn talent zag: "Die had nog een vuur staan en zo heb ik tóch het vak kunnen leren."

KRAMER SMITHY
Since time immemorial there has been a blacksmith in the neighbouring town of Oudewater, Hekendorp. And those blacksmiths all come from the same family: the Kramer family. The nature of the work has changed in all those years, the first blacksmith made skates and after that the forge went from all kinds of repair work in the old days to large restoration pieces nowadays.
ON THE VERGE OF DEATH
Owner Frits is proud of his business and attached to Hekendorp. Becoming a blacksmith was not without a struggle. Whereas the earlier generations of Kramer - the forge has existed for more than 100 years - were sometimes obliged to work in the business, Frits was advised against it. "At school they said that the trade was dead. You couldn't learn to be a blacksmith in my day." Frits did not leave it at that and fortunately he found a teacher who saw something in his talent: "He still had a fire and so I was able to learn the trade after all.
