The Greek island of Mykonos is one of the Cyclades islands located in the Aegean Sea. The most noticeable feature of this island is their windmills. There are 16 windmills distributed around the island. The most conspicuous and famous are the Windmills of Chora, a line of five windmills, standing next to each other in a row, on a ridge. They and can be seen as you enter the harbor or walk around the village of Mykonos, which is often called Chora of Mykonos.
The windmills were originally built by the Venetians in the 16th century and continued to be constructed into the early 20th century. They are similar in appearance: round, white, and with wood covered pointed roofs. Their primary purpose was for milling wheat. They were discontinued in the middle of the 20th century. Today they stand, in well maintained condition, as testimony to the islands cultural heritage and spirit of innovation.
