Who can forget a song like ‘Unforgettable’ or other timeless classics such as ‘Mona Lisa’ or ‘When I Fall in Love?’ Over a nearly thirty-year career, Nat King Cole had about 150 hit songs on various record charts.

Born Nathaniel Coles in Montgomery, Alabama, Nat King Cole began his pursuit of a music career at the age of 15. Classically trained on the piano, Cole played in various jazz ensembles before joining the cast of the Eubie Blake classic ‘Shuffle Along.’ After his stint on stage, he formed a band called the King Cole trio, named after the children’s nursery rhyme ‘Old King Cole’ which also became the basis for his nickname.

The King Cole trio’s first hit was the jazz standard ‘Sweet Lorraine’ in 1940. Nat King Cole started as a jazz piano player but slowly shifted to vocals on various pop songs. He had so many hits with Capitol Records that the iconic Capitol Records building in Hollywood was often called ‘The House that Nat Built.’ His last album entitled ‘L-O-V-E’ was released just a few days before he died in 1965.

Besides a recording career, Nat King Cole appeared in numerous films and television shows, usually as himself. His daughter Natalie Cole also went on to have a successful singing career.
