Der Vorsitzende von Pro Mendig e.V. danke dem Stadtbürgermeister für die Unterstützung bei diesem Projekt und bei der Suche eines attraktiven Stellplatzes, der jetzt an der Ecke Hauptstraße- Teichwiese, auf dem durch den Steinhauer-Verein gestalteten Platz, gefunden wurde.
Weiterhin dankte der Vorsitzende auch den weiteren Sponsoren. So haben Dipl.-Restaurator Stefan Retterath, Schreibwaren Waldecker und Landhandel Geisen das Projekt ebenfalls unterstützt.
Auch die Mendiger Stadtbücherei unterstützt dieses Projekt durch eine namhafte Buchspende zum Start des Bücherschranks.
Das Prinzip des Bücherschrankes ist einfach: Jeder kann sich formlos ein Buch ausleihen. Er kann es zurückbringen oder auch behalten und dann dafür ein anderes Buch einstellen. So kann der Bücherschrank seine Aufgabe, der Leseförderung zu dienen, durch ein ständig wechselndes Sortiment erfüllen. Neben Büchern aus den Sparten Belletristik, Sachbuch, Reiseliteratur, Krimis, Thriller und Fantasy finden sich Kinder- und Jugendbücher.
Auch fremdsprachliche Bücher sind im Angebot. Neben Büchern in englischer oder französischer Sprache findet sich auch eine Anzahl Bücher in russischer oder deutsch-russischer Sprache. Auch viele Mendiger haben bereits Bücher gestiftet, so dass der Bücherschrank viele aktuelle Bücher, darunter auch Bücher von der Spiegel-Bestsellerliste enthält. Und wer Glück hat, findet auch ein Hörbuch oder ein Spiel.
