" La Porte d’Occident s’inscrit parmi les quatre portes de ville que comptait l’enceinte interne médiévale. Les portes de ville font partie intégrante des fortifications et avaient pour fonction de protéger le cœur de la cité en empêchant les ennemis d’entrer. Elles étaient souvent munies d’un pont-levis, nécessaire pour franchir les fossés, de herses et d’épaisses portes en chêne. Les portes de ville étaient fréquemment crénelées et munies de systèmes défensifs internes comme un chemin de ronde ou un assommoir.
La porte d’Occident fut construite vers le 13e siècle. De porte de ville, elle devint Beffroi vers le 16e siècle et se couvre d’un clocher et d’une horloge. Au Moyen-âge, le beffroi a une grande importance : il est le symbole des libertés communales et il abrite les cloches servant à
prévenir le peuple d’un événement comme une délibération ou l’approche d’un ennemi.
La Porte d’Occident se présente sous la forme d’une tour carrée qui était crénelée avant d’être recouverte d’un toit de tuiles plates à quatre pans.
Elle est surmontée d’un clocher octogonal qui n’est pas sans rappeler celui de l’église. Le passage de la porte se fait par un arc en plein cintre et une ouverture étroite est présente au sommet de la tour, sous le clocher. Elle servait de point de surveillance et permettait de sonner le tocsin. L’horloge de la ville est placée au-dessus de cette ouverture."
