The Woerdense Verlaat lock provides the shipping connection between the Kollensloot and the Grecht. At the beginning of 2017, a large-scale restoration was completed on behalf of Het Hoogheemraadschap De Stichtse Rijnlanden by Aannemingsbedrijf G. Van der Ven BV from Brakel. The current control building and the electrical installation were replaced and the mechanical components of the lock, such as the footbridge, the drives of the doors and the movement mechanism of the bypass sewer were overhauled.
PARTICULARITIES
The village of Woerdense Verlaat owes its name to the “verlaat”, the lock between the Grecht and the Kromme Mijdrecht. The Grecht was dug in 1366 as a drainage channel for excess water from the polders Achttienhoven and Kamerik to the Oude Rijn and soon became an important shipping connection between Woerden and the north via the Kromme Mijdrecht and the Amstel. A number of houses, a pub and some other buildings were built around the lock and the bridge. Due to the fairly busy shipping traffic, “Woerdense Verlaat”, as the neighborhood was soon called, had grown from a quiet place in the polder into a small village. The lock remained the property of the municipality of Woerden until 1995. In that year, the Woerden Water Board, which merged into De Stichtse Rijnlanden in 1995, took over the management and maintenance of the lock.
a small special feature is that this lock can work in both directions, because the water level on both sides regularly differs in height
