es: "Edificio El Moderno
Arquitecto: Michel Pacewicz

Architect: Michel Pacewicz
Year: 1897
Location: Calle Policarpo Sanz, 1
It is one of the most emblematic works of Michel Pacewicz and of the eclecticism of the 19th century in the city. It is popularly known as "Hotel El Moderno" for having housed a hotel facility for a long time.

In this building, the author's Parisian eclecticism is masterfully mixed with the work of local stonemasons.

It has two facades, articulated through a rounded chamfer topped with a dome and a pavilion. On the first floor, the openings topped with semicircular arches and the continuous stonework balcony stand out.

Policarpo Sanz's façade is symmetrical, with two lateral bodies topped by a neo-baroque pediment pierced with an ornate oculus. On the second and third floors, these bodies are highlighted by the use of giant Corinthian columns. The Carral street façade has a similar composition but is arranged asymmetrically.

In terms of decoration, the floral garlands that frame the lintels of the openings of the upper floors and the different corbels and false keystones of the arches throughout the building stand out.

The building was renovated several times; in one of them, made by Desiderio Pernas, the roof system is transformed and the chromatism of the chamfered dome is lost."
