A rúa dos Cesteiros (the street of the basket makers) is a characteristic narrow street in the historic neighborhood of Vigo that starts from Praza da Constitución and transports us back in time to a past of artisans and merchants in old Vigo.
Vigo maintains an important craft tradition, as a tribute to past times in which the utensils that we use today for decoration were work tools. Materials such as leather, wood, ceramics, and trades such as bookbinding, lace or goldsmithing adopt new forms with ancient arts.
Touring the artisan shops of Historic Vigo you can take a traditional hand-woven bag or give yourself some modern earrings made of paper, jewels or enamels, but what you cannot miss is Vigo basketry, one of the oldest trades in the city.
The baskets, which were used here to store fish or products from the garden, were made with a variety of materials, from reeds to oak wood. In Cesteiros street, 20 artisans came to work together, and today the baskets offer a fabulous postcard, stacked at the doors of their shops.
