The Golden Age of Illustration (roughly from the 1870s to the 1920s) was an era of richly illustrated books and profusely illustrated magazines and periodicals which were widely available and very popular. In America, one of the more prolific illustrators during this time was Jessie Willcox Smith.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Smith studied at the Philadelphia Academy under Thomas Eakins and also received training from the master, Howard Pyle. She had a short stint as a kindergarten teacher but found that she disliked dealing with children, in fact she had no children of her own and never married. This is odd in that she is especially known for her many tender illustrations of mothers and their children.

Over a 40+ year career, Jessie Willcox Smith produced illustrations for some 60 books and 250 periodicals including 200 covers. Her relationship with Good Housekeeping magazine lasted for over twenty years. She also painted portraits and some fine art.

In 2001, Jessie Willcox Smith was one of twenty illustrators featured on a set of U.S. postage stamps. The stamp reproduces her illustration entitled ‘The First Lesson’ from a 1904 issue of Ladies Home Journal. It was the first in a series of illustrations representing ‘firsts’ in a child’s life.
