"The Dunkirk Memorial is a memorial of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorating the 4,505 missing British Expeditionary Force (BEF), most of whom fell before and during the Battle of Dunkirk in 1939 and 1940, at the autumn the Second World War.

Located in the Dunkirk City Cemetery in France, Commission architect Philip Hepworth designed memorial panels, a shelter-like sanctuary and a glass engraved by John Hutton. Among those commemorated were soldiers lost on ships sunk during the evacuation, as well as a recipient of the Victoria Cross.

The memorial was completed some 17 years after the events it marks. It was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1957, in front of visiting dignitaries, and hundreds of veterans and relatives of those who died. Later, the commemorations held here include the 75th anniversary in 2015.

On each side of the entrance doors are the inscription panels in English and French, topped with stone urns. There are 4,505 names inscribed on the memorial, in the form of Portland stone screen walls standing in two rows on either side of an avenue leading to a sanctuary with a window (18 ft. X 9 ft). × 2.7 m)) engraved with scenes from the evacuation.

Other screen walls are attached to the sanctuary, in the center of which is a circular wooden seating area integrated with the cabinet containing the CWGC cemetery and memorial register."
