Als je via de A31 van Leeuwarden naar Harlingen rijdt zie je ter hoogte van Franeker aan de rechter kant een prachtig rood kerkje.
Dit is het kerkje van het kleine dorpje Boer.

Boer is een gehucht aan de provinciale weg tussen Dongjum en Berlikum, het telt slechts 19 woningen, 45 inwoners en een kerk. Dat is de typisch donkerrode bepleisterde Mariakerk, uit de 12e eeuw. Vlak naast de kerk staat het oudste nog bestaande stenen woonhuis van Friesland.
De ingang van deze Romaanse kerk uit 1664 is heel bijzonder: het is gesierd met twee leeuwen en een vaas, afkomstig van de afgebroken stins Elgersmastate.
Regelmatig worden er in de Mariakerk van Boer pelgrims verwelkomd die het eerste deel van het Jabikspaad tussen Zwarte Haan en Franeker lopen.
De Mariakerk is eigendom van Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken en wordt sinds de restauratie in 2008 beheerd door een actieve Plaatselijke Commissie, die hier concerten organiseert en de kerk ook beschikbaar stelt voor trouw- en rouwdiensten.
De gepleisterde eenbeukige kerk uit de 12e eeuw kerk was oorspronkelijk gewijd aan Maria. In de 16e eeuw werd de kerk verhoogd en uitgebreid met een gotisch koor met steunberen en een toren. De luidklok uit 1561 is van klokkengieter Willem Wegewaert. Het ingangsportaal uit 1664, gesierd met twee leeuwen en een vaas, is afkomstig van de afgebroken stins Elgersmastate. Het interieur wordt gedekt door een tongewelf uit de 17e eeuw.
De Hervormde kerk is sinds 1975 buiten gebruik. Eigenaar van het rijksmonument is de Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken. In 2008 (aangegeven op de wijzerplaat) werd de kerk gerestaureerd.

Boer is a hamlet on the provincial road between Dongjum and Berlikum, it has only 19 houses, 45 inhabitants and a church. That is the typical dark red plastered Maria Church, from the 12th century. Right next to the church is the oldest surviving stone house in Friesland.
The entrance to this Romanesque church from 1664 is very special: it is decorated with two lions and a vase from the demolished stins Elgersmastate.
Pilgrims are regularly welcomed in the Mariakerk in Boer who walk the first part of the Jabikspaad between Zwarte Haan and Franeker.
The Mariakerk is owned by the Alde Fryske Tsjerken Foundation and has been managed since the restoration in 2008 by an active Local Commission, which organizes concerts here and also makes the church available for wedding and funeral services.
The plastered single-aisled 12th century church was originally dedicated to Mary. In the 16th century the church was raised and extended with a Gothic choir with buttresses and a tower. The ringing bell from 1561 is by bell founder Willem Wegewaert. The entrance portal from 1664, decorated with two lions and a vase, comes from the demolished stins Elgersmastate. The interior is covered by a barrel vault from the 17th century.
The Reformed Church has been out of use since 1975. The Alde Fryske Tsjerken Foundation is the owner of the national monument. In 2008 (indicated on the dial) the church was restored.
