Midden in het uitgestrekte landschap staat een klein rood kerkje.
"Een klein middeleeuws gebouw. Kerk voor en van een heel klein dorp. Men denkt aan een kapel behorend tot een minikloostertje zoals er zoveel waren in Friesland voor de reformatie. Een kloostertje met één of misschien wel twee monniken of nonnen. In later tijd worden de kleine middeleeuwse vensters vervangen door grote ramen. Na de reformatie wordt het dorpskerk van een buurtschap behorend tot Schalsum. Later werd het ingedeeld bij Dongjum en uiteindelijk bij Ried. Kerkelijk behoort het dorpje Boer tegenwoordig bij de protestantse streekgemeente van Ried-Skingen. Het is altijd een kleine en eenvoudige kerk geweest. De preekstoel is gemaakt in 1750 en is geschonken door Ignatius thou Kingma, Heer van Zweins. Tot 1914 stond deze preekstoel opgesteld tegen de noordmuur. Met daarom heen een doophek. In 1914 werd de kerk gemoderniseerd. De preekstoel kwam tegen de oostmuur te staan. Met daarvoor het doophek. Op het hek stond een lezenaar. Bij deze herinrichting werd het oostraam, kenmerkend voor kloosterkerken dichtgezet. Twee rijen banken gericht op de preekstoel. In de kerk heeft nooit een pijporgel gestaan. In 1914 werd in plaats daarvan een groot kerkharmonium aangekocht. Afkomstig van de doopsgezinde gemeente van Balk.
Een uniek instrument waarvan er geen tweede is in Nederland. Het kerkharmonium kreeg een plaats op de kraak. Eind 20e eeuw raakte de kerk in verval. In 1975 stopten de kerkdiensten. In 2004 vond een grote restauratie plaats. Sindsdien is de Mariakerk weer in gebruik. Ook voor kerkdiensten. In de kerk staat een bijzonder mooi oud Mariabeeld, geschonken in 2004 door een inwoner van Boer. Tot het bezit van de kerk behoort een oude katafalk. (doodsbaar) Deze hangt als versiering in de hal van de kerk. De buitenkant van de kerk is geheel bepleisterd. Waardoor jammer genoeg het fraaie middeleeuwse metselwerk niet meer zichtbaar is. De kerk heeft een bijzondere ingangspoort. Het is uit 1664, en afkomstig van de afgebroken stins Elgersmastate. In de toren hangt een luidklok uit1561 gegoten door Willem Wegewaert. Het oude kerkharmonium wacht op restauratie.
De Mariakerk is eigendom van de Stichting Âlde Fryske Tsjerken, terwijl het kerkhof eigendom is van de Protestantse Gemeente van Ried Skingen."

In the middle of the vast landscape is a small red church.
A small medieval building. Church in front of and from a very small village. One thinks of a chapel belonging to a mini-monastery like there were so many in Friesland before the Reformation. A monastery with one or maybe two monks or nuns. In later times the small medieval windows are replaced by large windows. After the Reformation, the village church became a hamlet belonging to Schalsum. Later it was assigned to Dongjum and finally to Ried. Ecclesiasically, the village of Boer now belongs to the protestant regional community of Ried-Skingen. It has always been a small and simple church.
