Armytage House was built in 1860 from Barrabool freestone ashlar and basalt rubble and originally named The Hermitage and was at that time one of the finest Colonial Regency style mansion houses in Victoria. The most distinctive features are the Ionic portico and encircling wrought iron verandah. The building housed the Geelong Church of England Girls Grammar School (1905-1973), the City of Newtown Council Offices (1973 - c 2000) .
