The USS Tennessee, also known as Armored Cruiser Nr 10 and later renamed Memphis was launched on the 8th November 1906 and wrecked on 29th August 1916.
The ship has been anchored of the coast of Santo Domingo, not far from fort San Gil, most of the summer.
On that day the crew noticed that seas were becoming rough but before they could maneuvre they were hit by the waves, which flooded part of the ship. A succession of three gian waves, between 20 and 30 m tall hit the ship which rolled and hit the rocky coral cliffs.
It sunk in less than 90 min. 4 men died and 204 were left badly injured.
The entire ship was scrapped. The ship’s bell was given to the people of Santo Domingo to thank them for their help in rescuing the ship’s crew. The bell is now located in the Iglesia Las Mercedes.
