Left Hand became Chief of the Southern Arapahos upon the death of his predecessor in 1889. When the Arapahos were moved to Indian Territory, this land, noted for its fresh-water spring, was part of Chief Left Hand's allotment. The grave stone of his friend Jesse Chisholm, who died of food poisoning while encamped here, is nearby, as well as two historical markers (for Chisholm and for Left Hand). The Chisholm Trail passed near here and
Left Hand Spring was an important watering stop. Left Hand is also buried here, but his grave site is unknown. The spring is a few hundred paces down the hill from the historical markers and Jesse Chisholm's grave; it flows from NE to SW from under the hill. On my visit the spring was flowing freely; the shallow stream was moving at a few feet per second.
