This monastery (or convent, as stated on a plate on a wall) was built by the Spanish between 1509 and 1560, which makes it the first convent or monastery in the Americas. The builder was Nicolás de Ovando. The ruins cover an huge area of prime land in the historical center of Santo Domingo, the capital city of Dominican Republic.
The attack of Francis Drake, hurricanes and a few earthquakes damaged the original buildings but still in the early 20th century it was used as a mental asylum.
Unfortunately it's closed to visits.
