"Present-day Heusden was founded around 1200, at the castle of the Lords of Heusden. Strategically located on the Bergsche Maas and link between the Biesbosch and 's-Hertogenbosch. In 1680, the fortified town of Heusden was startled by huge explosions. Cannon shots from the enemy? No, lightning struck the powder tower! The explosion destroyed the castle but the old foundations were rebuilt. After 1968, the fortified town of Heusden was completely restored. Now it looks like you are walking through the 17th century streets again."
