Besides this having been the site of the first hotel, there was another first in the kitchen, as the marker relates:
Built in 1848 by Rev. Hampton McKinney (1796-1857), was first hotel in Corsicana. The McKinney Tavern or McKinney Inn as it was also called was a two story structure built of logs and covered with hand hewn or riven boards because there were no sawmills in the area at that time.
The two-story tavern consisted of two large rooms downstairs with a long gallery in front, two other rooms attached at one corner with a long L-shaped section in back for a dining room with a kitchen beyond. Upstairs was a single large room. Most of the rooms had a large fireplace and the kitchen had what is believed to have been the first cookstove brought into Corsicana.
McKinney Tavern served as an inn, post office, meeting place for lawyers while court was in session, and sometimes photographers would use the tavern as temporary studios where they would make daguerreotype photographs for local families.
Many notable Navarro County residents boarded for a time at the McKinney Tavern: Alexander Beaton, Roger Q. Mills, John L. Miller, Clinton M. Winkler, John H. Reagan, and many others.
