The Swainsley dovecote can be seen from the Manifold Way footpath and cycleway near to the entrance to the Swainsley Tunnel.
(Coordinates: N53 06.916 W001 51.988)

The circular dovecote is constructed from stone and has a tiled roof. It is situated in a field adjacent to the River Manifold, and belongs to Swainsley Hall.

Pigeons and Doves were once an important food source and they were encouraged to nest in dovecotes to provide flesh and eggs.

The dovecote may predate Swainsley Hall which was built in the 1860s for Roscoe a London solicitor. Thomas Wardle bought Swainsley Hall in 1896 as a weekend house. He and had many famous guests including Samuel Langhorne Clemens (better known as Mark Twain) and Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout movement.
More recently, the hall has been used as a hotel, pub and restaurant, though it is now a private house.
