This is a tunnel which was built under a road. It was built on what is called the Great Flat Lode. It was designed to take a rail line, a tramway, suitable for the carriage of ore. Ore was mined from the rich tin and copper seams within the area

It was interesting to read on the plaque over the tunnel, that the tunnel was originally built in or around 1907 and yet the mines closed down around 1899.
Looking at historic mapping it is believed that the original "tramway was part of the access "tarmac" road, hence the date variance.

The tunnel was rebuilt during 1997 following road improvements.
