Historically,
Following the tragic deaths of individuals either whilst working on the railway lines or the general public at strategic crossing points
Rail operators were, "pulled to task" through the UK Parliament, and enforced under the "Railways Regulation Act 1893". To require the rail operator to:-"adopt proper precautions for the safety of the public and officials".
This included the need for advanced warnings and barriers for road crossings.
At this railway crossing, there are four barrier gates that drop down with warning sounds and flashing lights.
As this level crossing is adjacent to the train station, it is common for the crossings to remain closed for a long time.
This is of course dependent on season and time. Like today, the day of my visit, with the train arriving in the station with a train full of commuters and students disembarking.
