Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, is the central figure of the two part sculptural group that depicts the story of Diana and Actaeon. Diana is on the east side of the pool. She is standing on a rock and surrounded by nymphs who are about to enter the water.

According to the Latin version of the mythological story as told by the Ovid, the hunter Actaeon accidentally sees Diana while she is bathing in the nude. Diana then turns Actaeon into a deer and he is set upon and killed by his fifty hunting dogs. The west part of this two part sculptural group depicts Actaeon, as a deer, being attacked by his dogs.

The marble sculptural group was created for the Bourbon King Charles VII of Naples by sculptors Paolo Persico, Angelo Brunelli and Pietro Solari.

The stamp shows the Diana portion of the sculpture on the right side and the Royal Palace of Caserta on the left side. it was issued by Italy on February 1, 1952 to honor architect Luigi Vanvitelli.
