The death of Prince Albert saw a flurry of construction of monuments and buildings to commemorate his life, with Exeter's museum in Queen Street one such example, and was completed in 1868.
The contents of the museum soon outgrew the building, and it was necessary for extensions to be added -
this one in 1894 (by Medley Fulford), a bequest by Kent Kingdon (

visit link) , and another later in 1898 (by Tait and Harvey).
This date stone is located on the south east side of the building, on Upper Paul St.
The inscription reads -
THIS STONE WAS LAID

ON THE 1st AUGUST 1894
