Dante was exiled from the Florence. Today, his hometown honors the memory of their most famous poet in many different ways.
A plaque on the west wall of the defensive tower known as the Torre della Zecca contains a quote about the Arno River taken from the Purgatory section of his narrative poem Divine Comedy.
The plaque is inscribed:
