The B9134 road runs between the Angus towns of Forfar and Brechin for 12 miles over mostly hilly terrain. The route has now been largely replaced by the A94, now the A90, a dual carriageway running to the north along the flatter ground of Strathmore, leaving the B9134 as the scenic route.
As the road approaches the A935 to the west of Brechin, it crosses the River South Esk by a stone arched bridge at Stannochy. This bridge, with a 100 feet span, one of the longest arched spans in Scotland, is a segmental arch of local stone built by James Smith in 1825-26 to a designed influenced by Robert Stevenson.
The bridge features a coped parapet, surmounted at both ends with railings. The roadway is a narrow 14 feet wide, with traffic crossing in single-file, priority is for traffic heading north-eastwards towards Brechin.
