Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen was born here in Torp 16 July 1872.
Roald Amundsen made extensive measurements of the magnetic north pole. He became the first man at the South Pole in 1911 and is also the first for whom he succeeds in sailing through the Northwest Passage.
Amundsen disappears on June 18, 1928, while on a plane he participates in a rescue mission after his comrade Umberto Nobile. Only a few wreckage of his plane was found in the area by the island of Bjørnøya. By the way, Umberto Nobile later shows up safe and sound. The date 18, June 1928 is presumed to be his day of death.
