De Werkspoorkathedraal, voorheen bekend als de Apparatenhal, is een van de historische fabriekshallen van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Fabriek van Werktuigen en Spoorwegmaterieel – kortweg ‘Werkspoor’ genoemd. Deze Amsterdamse machinefabriek werd opgericht in 1828 en produceerde motoren, stoommachines en rollend materieel.

In de jaren na de oprichting breidt Werkspoor zijn werkterrein uit. In 1912 koopt het bedrijf het industriële terrein in het Utrechtse Zuilen. Vanaf 1914 werken arbeiders in een nieuw fabriekencomplex aan stalen bruggen, treinen, trams en spoorwagons. Ze zijn trots op hun vak en gedreven door de techniek.

Jaren later, als de vraag naar treinen en bruggen afneemt, besluit Werkspoor meer diensten aan te bieden. Dit is de aanleiding voor de bouw van de Apparatenhal in 1960, die wordt gebruikt als montagehal. In deze imposante ruimte van 20 tot 30 meter hoogte worden jarenlang grote staalconstructies gemaakt.

In de jaren 70 sluit de hal voor de productie van rollend materieel. Ruim tien jaar later sluit ook de afdeling Apparatenbouw. Met de sluiting van de Werkspoorfabriek eindigt een roemrucht stuk industriële geschiedenis van Utrecht en verdwijnen ook veel van de voormalige fabriekshallen uit het gebied. De voormalige Apparatenhal blijft gespaard van de slopershamer en na jaren van tijdelijk gebruik en leegstand start in 2015 de renovatie naar de huidige Werkspoorkathedraal. De oorspronkelijke inrichting is daarbij in tact gebleven en met respect voor de historie aangepast aan de eisen van deze tijd.

Na de grote opknapbeurt krijgt het pand de beschikking over acht studio’s. Die worden gehuurd door tien innovatieve ondernemers. Zij kiezen de Werkspoorkathedraal als hun thuisbasis en creëren een bijzondere werksfeer. De voormalige Apparatenhal is omgetoverd tot een imposante evenementenlocatie. De hal wordt regelmatig gebruikt voor uiteenlopende events en activiteiten. Van een zakelijk congres tot een foodfestival, van theater tot operaproductie; de mogelijkheden zijn oneindig!

The Werkspoorkathedraal, formerly known as the Apparatenhal, is one of the historic factory halls of the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Fabriek van Werktuigen en Spoorwegmaterieel – simply called 'Werkspoor'. This Amsterdam machine factory was founded in 1828 and produced engines, steam engines and rolling stock.

In the years after its foundation, Werkspoor expanded its field of activity. In 1912, the company bought the industrial site in Zuilen in Utrecht. From 1914, workers in a new factory complex worked on steel bridges, trains, trams and railway wagons. They are proud of their profession and driven by technology.

Years later, when the demand for trains and bridges decreases, Werkspoor decides to offer more services. This is the reason for the construction of the Apparatenhal in 1960, which is used as an assembly hall. Large steel structures have been made for years in this imposing space, which is 20 to 30 meters high.

In the 1970s the hall for the production of rolling stock closes. More than ten years later, the Apparatenbouw department also closes. With the closure of the Werkspoorfabriek, an illustrious piece of industrial history of Utrecht ends and many of the former factory halls also disappear from the area. The former Apparatenhal has been spared from the demolition hammer and after years of temporary use and vacancy, the renovation to the current Werkspoorkathedraal will start in 2015. The original interior has remained intact and has been adapted to the requirements of this time with respect for history.

After the major refurbishment, the building will have eight studios at its disposal. These are rented by ten innovative entrepreneurs. They choose Werkspoorkathedraal as their home base and create a special working atmosphere. The former Apparatenhal has been transformed into an impressive event location. The hall is regularly used for various events and activities. From a business conference to a food festival, from theater to opera production; the possibilities are endless!
