The north of the centre of Zierikzee has some nice waymarks to visit

NL Het historische centrum van Zierikzee is goed bekend en een hele toffe toeristische attractie. Dat geldt iets minder voor het noordelijke deel van het centrum. Toch kan je hier ook veel bijzondere dingen zien, ontdekte ik tijdens een wandeling. Ik neem je graag mee voor een rondje Zierikzee-Noord. De route start op de Jannewekken. Vroeger was dit gebied grotendeels in gebruik als tuinen en boomgaarden. Er waren ook enkele kloosters. Jannewekken betekent: ‘klein weggetje van Jan’ in het lokale dialect. We gaan eerst naar het oosten, de stad uit.

Je komt dan een groot appartementengebouw tegen. Op de noordoosthoek is de eerste stop van de tour. Op de locatie van het appartementengebouw is vroeger de Ambachtsschool geweest. De eerste steen van de school zit nog in het gebouw. Op het bord staat de ‘populatie’ van de eerste jaargang van de school. Het eerste ‘population signs’ waymark in Nederland! (WM15MQQ) Ga verder de Jannewekken door. Ga de gracht over en sla linksaf. Je komt dan langs een huisje met een opvallende schoorsteen (WM15MQM).

Na een tijdje lopen kom je aan bij de Rooms-Katholieke begraafplaats van St. Barbara. Dit is stop 2 (WM15MQF). Omdat de Rooms-Katholieken in het protestante Zierikzee een minderheid waren, moest de begraafplaats buiten de stadsgracht gegraven worden. Zelfs in 1870 was het nog lastig om deze begraafplaats te realiseren. Het is nu een rustig en mooi parkje geworden. Achterop de begraafplaats is een mooi wit kruis (WM15MQG). Vervolg je weg over de Grachtweg naar het busstation (WM15MQD). Op het busstation, vergeet niet het bord van de stad Zierikzee langs de N59 te fotograferen. Dit levert je een ‘Z place names’ en een ‘sister city monument’waymark op.

Als je verder langs de Grachtweg loopt, kom je bij het hoogtepunt van de tour; de prachtige en imposante Middeleeuwse stadspoort de Nobelpoort (WM15MHX, WM15MHY en WM15MHZ). Deze stadspoort is in de 14e eeuw gebouwd en is een van de laatste restanten van de vroegere Middeleeuwse stadmuur. Ga over de brug onder de poort door. Dan kom je op de Korte Nobelstraat. Hier is ook een huis met een libelle deurklopper (nr 16). Aan het einde van de Korte Nobelstraat, ga naar links en meteen naar rechts.

Aan de rechterkant zie je dan de hoge torenmolen ‘De Hoop’. Dit is de laatste stop. De molen is nog helemaal gaaf en dateert uit 1850. (WM15M4J en WM6PWE). Tegenover de molen is een huis met een deurklopper in de vorm van een wolvenkop (WM15MBH). Het huis zelf is ook een Rijksmonument, al zou je dat niet zeggen (WM15MBY). Je kan terug naar het noorden, naar de Jannewekken, of je gaat dan naar het zuiden, verder het historische centrum van Zierikzee verkennen. Ik hoop dat je de waytour leuk vond.
ENG The historic center of Zierikzee is well known and a very nice tourist attraction. This is less true for the northern part of the center. Yet you can also see many special things here, I discovered during a walk. I would be happy to take you on a tour of Zierikzee-North. The route starts on the Janneweeks. In the past, this area was largely used as gardens and orchards. There were also some monasteries. Jannewekken means: 'little road of Jan' in the local dialect. We're going east first, out of town.

You will then come across a large apartment building. On the northeast corner is the tour's first stop. The craft school used to be on the location of the apartment building. The foundation stone of the school is still in the building. The board shows the 'population' of the first year of the school. The first 'population signs' waymark in the Netherlands! (WM15MQQ) Continue through the Jannewekken. Cross the canal and turn left. You will then pass a house with a striking chimney (WM15MQM).

After walking for a while you arrive at the Roman Catholic cemetery of St. Barbara. This is stop 2 (WM15MQF). Because the Roman Catholics were a minority in Protestant Zierikzee, the cemetery had to be dug outside the city moat. Even in 1870 it was still difficult to realize this cemetery. It has now become a quiet and beautiful park. At the back of the cemetery is a beautiful white cross (WM15MQG). Continue on the Grachtweg to the bus station (WM15MQD). At the bus station, don't forget to photograph the sign for the town of Zierikzee along the N59. This will give you a 'Z place names' and a 'sister city monument' waymark.

As you continue along the Grachtweg, you come to the highlight of the tour; the beautiful and imposing medieval city gate the Nobel Gate (WM15MHX, WM15MHY and WM15MHZ). This city gate was built in the 14th century and is one of the last remnants of the former medieval city wall. Go over the bridge under the gate. Then you come to the Korte Nobelstraat. Here is also a house with a dragonfly door knocker (nr 16). At the end of Korte Nobelstraat, turn left and immediately right.

On the right you will see the high tower mill 'De Hoop'. This is the last stop. The mill is still completely intact and dates from 1850. (WM15M4J and WM6PWE). Opposite the mill is a house with a door knocker in the shape of a wolf's head (WM15MBH). The house itself is also a national monument, although you wouldn't say that (WM15MBY). You can go back to the north, to the Jannewekken, or you can go south, further exploring the historic center of Zierikzee. I hope you liked the waytour.
