[EN] Very few have noticed that right next to the Cathedral there is an observatory at the top of the Booktower Kirjatorni building designed by Erik Bryggkman. A small observatory was completed in 1938 at the top of the new building called Åbo Akademi University Library, which was inaugurated in the autumn of 1935 with a donation from Gösta Branders. Its optical telescope is no longer used by researchers. The location is special, as the tall building is right in the city center. The same university now also owns another observatory on Vartiovuori. Neither is in use. The heights of the funktionalism-style cubic building designed by Bryggman can be reached by elevator. The observatory is not open to the public, but perhaps one day a public tour could be held there. The dome of the observatory is difficult to see right at the foot of the tall house. It shows up a little further away.

[FIN] Hyvin harva on huomannut että aivan Tuomiokirkon kupeessa on Erik Bryggkmanin suunnitteleman Kirjatorni rakennuksen huipulla oma observatorio.

Vuonna 1935 syksyllä käyttöön vihityn Gösta Brandersin lahjoitus varoin tehdyn Åbo Akademin kirjaston uusi Kirjatorni-nimisen rakennuksen huipulle valmistui vuonna 1938 pieni observatorio. Sen optinen kaukoputki ei ole enää ollut tutkijoiden käytössä. Sijoituspaikkana erikoinen, sillä korkea rakennus on aivan kaupungin keskustassa. Samalla yliopistolla on nykyään omistuksessa myös toinen observatorio Vartiovuorella. Kumpikaan ei ole käytössä.

Bryggmanin suunnitteleman funkkistyylisen kuutiomaisen rakennuksen korkeuksiin pääsee hissillä. Observatorio ei ole yleisölle avoinna, mutta ehkäpä jonain juhlapäivänä sinne voitaisiin järjestää yleisökierroksia. Observatorion kupolia on vaikeata nähdä aivan korkean talon juurelta. Se näkyy hyvin hieman kauempaa.
