Born and raised in Connecticut, Abraham Baldwin graduated from Yale in 1772 with a degree divinity. After the American Revolution, in which he served as a chaplain for the Continental Army, he relocated to Georgia where he quickly became involved in local politics, representing Georgia at the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and subsequently as both a Representative and Senator from the state of Georgia.
Baldwin was an active participant at the Constitutional Convention, helping to draw up the ‘Great Compromise’ which established two houses of Congress, one providing equal representation of each state (Senate) and the other providing representation based on population (House of Representatives). The above quote is representative of Baldwin’s conservative and conciliatory political philosophy.
Abraham Baldwin is also closely associated with the establishment of the University of Georgia which he served as first president. I’ve included a picture of a portrait of Abraham Baldwin by Charles Frederick Naegele which hangs in the main administrative building of the University of Georgia in Athens.
