About the event (according to the immaterieel erfgoed website)
"The Paardenmarkt in Vianen is part of the many festivities that are organized annually on and around the Wednesday prior to the second Thursday in October. The day before the Paardenmarkt, a large lantern procession is held, accompanied by music bands and ending at the funfair, which lasts until Saturday.
On the day of the Paardenmarkt itself, a large commodity market is held with a craft market and competitions for stand workers. Horse inspections take place in the morning program of the Paardenmarkt, in which the jury assesses the horses supplied and awards prizes. The Day Champion is ultimately chosen from the prize winners of each category. The owner will receive a bronze horse as a challenge trophy from the jury and the Zilveren Sporen from the municipality. A horse show concludes the morning program. In the afternoon the ring jousts are held, where the participants are dressed according to the theme of that year. After the ring stitch, folk games such as mast climbing and cake-beating and another horse show follow.
For the children there is a Kinderplein all day long with a mini-ring pitch, various games and a petting zoo. The inhabitants of Vianen eat pea soup and oliebollen that evening, part of the tradition. The fair days are closed with fireworks on Saturday evening."
