Op de hoek van de Gelderse Poort en de Lomstraat is een putdeksel met het wapen van de gemeente Venlo aangebracht. De gietijzeren putafsluiting laat het stadswapen van Venlo zien met de Latijnse spreuk ‘Festina lente cauta fac omnia mente’. In de rand van de putafsluiting is de naam van een fabrikant zichtbaar: Nering Bögel in Weert. Dit familiebedrijf is in 1756 in Deventer opgericht, in 1950 werd de onderneming opgekocht door De Globe, die we kennen van Tegelen en Belfeld. De ijzergieterij had ook vestigingen buiten de regio, in Hoensbroek en Weert. De putrand is dus na 1950 in Weert vervaardigd. Maar hoe zit het met de deksel? Is die even oud als de putrand? De autoriteit op het gebied van het Venlose gemeentewapen, Frans Hermans van het gemeentearchief, was de deksel ook opgevallen: “Op meerdere plaatsen in de stad liggen ze nu. Volgens mij verschijnen ze overal waar aan het riool wordt gewerkt. Kennelijk is het een bewuste actie. Misschien vloeit het voort uit een motie die enkele jaren geleden op initiatief van de VVD in de raad is aangenomen. Daarin wordt gepleit voor het meer zichtbaar maken van het stadswapen in het straatbeeld.

Met recht heeft Frans Hermans het over een oude traditie, want de geschiedenis van het stadswapen gaat terug tot de dertiende eeuw. Naar een tijd dus, dat Venlo nog een dorp was. De bekende halve leeuw en het anker staan afgebeeld op negen bewaard gebleven zegels van voor 1343, het jaar waarin Venlo stadsrechten krijgt. De leeuw verwijst naar de heren van Gelre, het anker staat mogelijk symbool voor de voor Venlo zo belangrijke handelsactiviteiten aan de haven. In de jaren na 1343 transformeert het bestaande zegel tot een echt stadszegel. De twee geharnaste figuren, die het wapen van Venlo op ogenschijnlijk ontspannen manier vasthouden, verschijnen voor het eerst op een afbeelding uit 1692. De twee dragen een vaandel met daarop weer een schildje met de halve leeuw en het anker. Onder het wapenschild staat eveneens voor het eerst de stadsspreuk. Waarom juist ‘Festina lente cauta fac omnia mente’ (Doe langzaam aan, doe alle dingen met de nodige voorzichtigheid in gedachten) onder het Venlose stadswapen is gekomen, blijft vooralsnog een raadsel. De spreuk werd rond 1500 populair door toedoen van de Rotterdamse humanist Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536).

Why 'Festina lente cauta fac omnia mente' (Take it slow, do all things with caution in mind) came under the Venlo city coat of arms remains a mystery for the time being. The proverb became popular around 1500 at the hands of the Rotterdam humanist Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536).
