Gore Vidal was born into an upper class family in West Point, NY on October 3, 1925. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire before enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the War he embarked on what was to become a prolific literary career. He published his first novel Williwaw in 1946. His most famous novel was Myra Breckinridge which was published in 1968.
In additions to novels he wrote many works of non-fiction, plays and screenplays. In 2009, he won the annual Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation.
