The "Chiesa di Santo Stefano Protomartire" (Church of St. Stephen Protomartyr) has a beautiful wooden pulpit on the right side. The tassels on the pulpit are each carved pieces of wood. Additionally, the pulpit has several carved decorations and inlays. Little to nothing is to be found about the pulpit online, but there is some information about the church:
"Church of St. Stephen Protomartyr (Malcesine)
The Church of St. Stephen Protomartyr is the parish church of Malcesine , in the province and diocese of Verona ; it is part of the vicariate of Lake Veronese-Caprino.
History
The primitive parish church of Malcesine probably arose where in ancient times there was a temple dedicated to the pagan goddess Isis.
In the ninth century the remains of saints Benigno and Caro were transferred to this church.
In 1159 the parish of Malcesine confirmed the jurisdiction over the churches of San Zeno di Brenzone, Sant'Angelo and Santi Simone, Giuda and Giovanni Evangelista.
In 1313 the bishop of Verona Teobaldo III had the bodies of the two aforementioned saints placed in a new stone urn and the church underwent a restoration at the behest of the bishop himself.
In 1514 the brotherhoods of Saints Benigno and Caro and of the Blessed Sacrament were established.
On October 16, 1562 , Pope Pius IV granted Santa Maria in Organo to the Olivetan friarsto found a monastery annexed to the parish church and to be in charge of the care of souls.
From the report of the pastoral visit of bishop Agostino Valier in 1567 we learn that seven altars were placed in the parish.
In 1624 the church was equipped with a new baptismal font for the interest of the vicar Federico Carlotti.
In 1729 the inhabitants of the village obtained from the abbot of Santa Maria in Organo the permission to demolish the ancient parish church and to rebuild it ; in that same year the first stone of the new parish church was laid. The works ended in 1739.
On 7 March 1759 the Olivetan friars left Malcesine following a provision taken by the Serenissima Republic of Venice the previous year and gave way to the diocesan clergy; a few months later, on 12 September, the parish was consecrated.
Between 1869 and 1882 the façade was rebuilt and in 1913 the interior of the church was decorated.
The church was renovated between 2013 and 2014.
Description
The interior of the church has a single nave with a barrel ceiling; the hall ends with the raised presbytery of two steps, in turn closed by the polygonal apse. Valuable works preserved here are the altarpiece with Saint Stephen the Protomartyr as its subject, made by Felice Boscaratti, the canvases depicting David and Abigaille and Rebecca receiving gifts from Abraham, the ceiling painting representing the Glory of Saint Stephen, performed by Odoardo Perini, also author of the fresco with the Martyrdom of Saint Stephen."
