Casimiro Chowell J. was a mining manager who was gave the rank of colonel in the insurgent forces in the Mexican War of Independence. After they took Guanajuato he was given the task of keep the town in good order. However, the Spanish returned, he was captured and hanged on this very spot.

The plaque is on the wall of the Wax Museum and has the following inscription:

Casimiro Chowell J.
ilustre patriota mexicano
fue sacrificado en esta
plazuela el día 28 de
noviembre de 1810.
