This informative sign is located on the boardwalk along the Suppernong River at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Columbia, North Carolina. The sign is for the Bald Cypress which several can be viewed along the boardwalk. The informative sign reads:

Bald Cypress
The bald cypress is a conifer, having needles and cones. However, unlike other conifers, the needles turn brown and fall in winter. Two theories for the function of the "knees" that surround the base of the tree are that the provide support on the unstable swamp floor or that they allow the tree to breathe when swamps are flooded.
