A bronze statue has been placed within the latticework of the old gas lantern. It is an image of an unknown child, a boy. He watches us from behind the bars.
The image raises questions. It's strange, it doesn't belong there, what is it doing there? The creator is Hans van Houwelingen. It's not about the image, it's about the idea behind it. It is not a fleeting image, you have to think about it literally and figuratively.
Hans van Houwelingen is a socially committed artist. He hopes to make people and children think with the image Other. Van Houwelingen wants to open up the debate about what is currently happening in the lives of people and children, who have been chased from their familiar environment by war and natural disasters. He consciously does not opt ??for an image of a child that represents this displacement, but for this form.
The statue was partly created by a contribution from the Harmsen van der Vliet-Ameshoff fund. This fund has the intention to invest in the center of Ede by means of donations to realize a series of works of art for children. Previously placed works are "Chico y Chica", "Oceanic Desire" and "Cat and Sparrow".
