Colonel in the Union Army, Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient, buried in Oakwood Cemetery (Section 10, Plot D, Lot 2), Hickory NC. He was born in New Hampshire in 1837. Served as Mayor of Lenoir North Carolina from 1875 to 1879.

Col. Cilley was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Captain in Co. C, 2d Minnesota Infantry for action on September 20, 1863 at Chickamauga GA.

His obituary in the Washington Weekly Post May 15, 1900, Page 3, Column 5 and 6 (in part)---Col. Clinton A. Cilley Dead--He served in the Federal army during the entire civil war, and later, while on duty in North Carolina, endeared himself to the people. He was by profession a lawyer and was under the provisional government a Superior Court judge.
