The Village of Friendship Heights was established in 1914 as a Special Tax District within Chevy Chase, MD. In 2002, local artist Steven Weitzman’s created this armillary sphere sundial in the newly formed Willoughby Park.

This large sundial is about 8' in diameter and features the signs of the zodiac along the outside of the ecliptic band. The gnomon cast it's shadow on the Roman numerals on the inside of the ecliptic band to tell the time of day. A flock of gulls flies over the north celestial pole, a metaphor for the concept that time flies.
Sundial Type: Armillary Sphere - series of rings in plane of equator
