The legend of Kiste Trui dates from the period of the Battle of the Mookerhei. This woman lived a few centuries ago in the hamlet of 'de Riethorst' near Middelaar. Trui was obsessed with finding a treasure chest belonging to Lodewijk and Hendrik van Nassau, who died in the battle of 1574. This chest, containing the salary for the soldiers of the Nassau, is said to have been hidden in the former swamps at the foot of the hills. Trui has searched for the chest all her life, hence her nickname. Day after day she was digging the ground with her spade until it drove her mad. The chest with money was never found.
