After several weeks of waiting, the planning project for Independence is already in the City Council and will presumably be studied next Thursday by the council of the Urban Planning Department. The technicians who made it, the same ones who made the car park (Fraga, Portolés and Quijada) have included a stone cladding throughout the premises (10,000 square meters), one of the largest urban squares in the city. But Independencia will not be a tough plaza. For this, around sixty trees will be planted (camellios, white maples, beeches, magnolias, linden trees, etc.) despite the underground parking. Apparently, a part of the square was not excavated and this will avoid the absence of trees. Precisely, the municipal objective is to form a plant mass as compact as possible and for this, trees will also be planted in the streets that converge in Independencia aligned in a row. On Pintor Colmeiro street, the slope will be used to create a sheet of water with successive steps that will end in an area of ??grass next to the sculpture of Cachamuiña, who will return from his temporary exile in the Plaza del Concello. The project also includes the installation of a score of benches, two stone fountains and fifty bins. The pedestrian zone will be isolated from the vehicle lanes by means of cast iron bollards. For the lighting, two models of double height street lamps will be used according to their location. There will also be a rainwater collection system designed to avoid flooding and an automatic irrigation system will be provided to facilitate the care of the various areas that will be covered with grass.
