The St Jan's church is one of the unique buildings in Waalwijk and it defines its "skyline". The neo-Byzantine church is unique and central in the church is its huge dome, with 12 smaller domes surrounding it. In the church at the back, there is a minituare of the church, I have added some pictures, so you get a good understanding of the layout.
The most unique part of the dome are the 38 stained glass windows made by Willem Wiegmans at the bottom of the dome.
"High in the church, like a colorful ring under the dome, is a series of 38 stained glass windows. Between abstract images are depicted the stern figures of sixteen Old Testament prophets: four so-called "major prophets" (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel) and twelve "minor prophets" such as Jonah and Habakkuk. Their names are spelled in the Catholic transliteration typical of the time; so Isaiah is called here 'Isaias'. They radiate authority and carry a serious message. In the Old Testament they exhorted the Israelites to a better way of life. After all, the misery of the Jewish people—the Assyrian rule, the destruction of the Temple, the Babylonian captivity—was due to reprehensible behavior. In their prophecies they announced the coming of a Messiah."
I added several pictures of the stained glass.
