Long Description:

The town of Blairgowrie lies in the eastern part of Perthshire on the western side of the River Ericht, the smaller settlement of Rattray lies on the eastern bank. The war memorial to the fallen of WWI was unveiled on June 19th 1921 in the Wellmeadow, a grassy space in the town centre. The memorial was sculpted by Alexander Carrick and is a 35 foot high tapering column topped by a sculpture of flames. At the foot, above the stepped base, is a sculpture of an old Scottish soldier in great-coat and helmet, resting on a rifle.

After the end of WWII, three metal plaques were erected on the sides of the memorial beneath the soldier sculpture. They contain 71 names with rank and unit, and were dedicated on June 6th 1948.
