In the course of its history, the village of Carbini has suffered a lot: it was completely razed during the barbarian incursions and was at the heart of the bloody crusade against the Giovannali, a religious movement suppressed in the fourteenth century.

Path from Giovannali to Carbini

Saint Jean-Baptiste is a beautiful example of this Romanesque art that Pisa made flourish in all Corsica. Built at the beginning of the 12th century, this baptismal church formed an important ensemble with the church of San Quilico, of which only the foundations remain, visible next to San Giovanni Battista, and the beautiful bell tower that oral tradition attributes to Maestro Maternato, who would have been the architect of both churches.
When Prosper Mérimée, on an inspection tour for the Monuments Historiques, discovered the church in 1840, the bell tower was in ruins, and only a section of the wall of San Quilito remained. Moved by the state of the whole, knowing the interest of the church and the bell tower, knowing, by his reading of Giovanni della Grossa, the history of the movement of the Giovannali which is attached to it, Mérimée asks for the classification. The bell tower was restored in 1903, using stones from San Quilico, but it was originally intended to be crenellated like the Tuscan towers from which it was inspired.
The church of Carbini and its bell tower are the place of worship of the Giovannali brotherhood, which was accused of heresy and persecuted for having challenged the authority of the Pope and the lords, and are inseparable from this emblematic history. The "Path of the Giovannali" that you can follow, higher up in the village, attempts to retrace the main stages of this history.
