About the bridge:
"Since the 1950s, there has been a desire in Maastricht to complete the planned ring road around the center by building two bridges, a 'zuiderbrug' and a 'northern bridge'. A large part of the City Park had to disappear for the construction of the bridge and the connecting Maasboulevard. The character of the stately Prins Bisschopsingel in the Villa Park also changed greatly due to the new layout and the intensive traffic flows. The construction by Rijkswaterstaat cost approximately 30 million guilders, of which the government paid 9.3 million.
The bridge was opened by Prince Claus in the pouring rain on 6 May 1968. The various traffic facilities, such as slip roads and traffic lights, were delayed due to the abrupt, untimely death of chief engineer W.P. Goedhart is not yet ready at that point. Of the Maasboulevard, on the site of the filled-in Liège-Maastricht Canal, only the part under the Kennedy Bridge (and a bit near the Wilhelmina Bridge) was completed.
As of 2012, the maximum speed on the bridge is 50 km/h, where it was previously 70 km/h. Speed ??on the bridge has been reduced as part of an initiative to create a safer Maastricht for cyclists."
